Renewable energy has a long way to go
Having read Nigel Griffith’s article on whether gas central heating is eco-friendly in Build It’s March issue, I wanted to raise some quick points about the topic.
I don’t think money should be taken as a guide for embodied energy. I believe the reason gas boilers are so cheap is because of market forces. If we had the same number of heat pumps installed as gas boilers then the price would improve.
As for CO2 emissions, the electricity grid in the UK is getting cleaner each year, while gas isn’t and won’t. I do agree that gas is a viable option if access to mains is available. However, even though heat pumps can be more expensive in the short term, they offer much more potential to help us reduce emissions in the long run.
