We speak to the MD of Unboxed Homes, Gus Zogolovitch, about its pioneering custom build scheme in London
PHYLLIS HO
What is a custom build home?
Generally, it’s where a developer buys a multi-plot site and puts in the infrastructure and services, ie roads and electricity. It could be a huge project, such as Graven Hill, or something smaller, like our new development at Pound Lane in Essex (more on that later).
Think of it as a spectrum: when it comes to buying a house, some custom build developers might simply give you the land with planning permission, and the rest is up to you. Others might have certain design stipulations or complete more of the build for you.
In a way, it’s a bit like self building, but someone else has done a bunch of the tricky stuff already. You get involved further along in the process – rather than having to worry about obtaining planning, connecting services, getting consent from the Highways England etc.
