You might say that The Great Human League Schism of 1980 was responsible for Tina Turner’s comeback. When Martyn Ware and Ian Craig Marsh left to form British Electric Foundation (BEF), they enlisted her for a synthed-up cover of The Temptations’ Ball Of Confusion for 1982’s Music Of Quality And Distinction Volume One. This collaboration was so successful, Turner landed a solo record deal and released a Ware-produced cover of Al Green’s Let’s Stay Together that reached the Top 10 in 1983.
Let’s Stay Together eventually landed on Private Dancer, a huge hit that cemented Turner as one of the biggest stars of the 80s.
