Don’t be put off by their admittedly annoying name, with its connotations of Antipodean gothic wackiness. Led by Stu Mackenzie, this six-piece manage to be so many things simultaneously, both eccentric and centric. Their use of the Arabic microtonal scale sets them off-kilter from orthodox progressions, as on the beautiful Straws In The Wind, but they have about them too the classic propulsion of an R.E.M. as well as the inventive elaboration of the best of 70s prog. They’re at once myriad and multi-angled and straight ahead.
