Question of the Fortnight
Why does the Govt want to access your private files?
It asked Apple to disable its most advanced security protection
No company hates being told what to do more than Apple. In 2022, the EU forced it to ditch its Lightning charging cable for USB-C, then a year later ordered it to let users install apps from outside the App Store. Now, the UK Government has pressured it into weakening iCloud encryption, putting your private files at risk of being accessed by other people.
The move came as a surprise to Apple and many cyber-security experts. In February, the Government asked the company for access to encrypted files that users have stored on its online storage service iCloud.
