BORDEAUX 2016: A NEW LEGEND IN THE MAKING?
Bordeaux has enjoyed a run of three good vintages in 2014, 2015 and 2016, something that is extremely rare (1988, 1989 and 1990 would be another similar triumvirate), and it’s hard to pin the tail on 2016 as being definitively the best, much as many producers in the region would like to. Having said that, this is without doubt an exceptional year and, fascinatingly, it is one that challenges your preconceptions over what exactly makes a great vintage. For a start, it is not an even success across red, white and sweet wines. It is unquestionably a red wine year, and the best are up with the greatest ever produced in the region. But Bordeaux 2016 reds are not necessarily what you expect from a blockbuster year. While the overall vintage can’t be classed as the best ever, the red wines across both Left and Right Banks are some of the finest produced, with many potential perfect scores. Jane Anson reports.
