Derek Rose’s 3,500 Lb-Ft Dodge Goes on a Strict Diet
In preparation for this year’s Ultimate Callout Challenge, two-time U.C.C. runner-up Derek Rose has shaved more than 1,000 pounds off his regular-cab, center-drive Dodge’s curb weight. On top of that, a few more weight-saving measures, including fiberglass doors, might still be in store for this nasty Cummins: Rose’s goal is to apply 1,500 to 1,700 hp to the drag strip and once again make somewhere in the neighborhood of 2,500 hp and 3,500 lb-ft of torque on the rollers. If all goes according to plan, look for this U.C.C. regular to storm through the quarter-mile in the mid-8s. (Could 2019 be the year Rose goes all the way?)

FCA Reaches Emissions Settlement for 3.0L EcoDiesel
On January 10th, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles reached a settlement with the EPA, U.S. Department of Justice, California Air Resources Board, all 50 states and U.S. Customs and Border Protection regarding the charge that the company installed defeat devices in its 3.0L EcoDiesel software. FCA maintains that no deliberate scheme to skirt emission regulations was employed; nevertheless, it agreed to settle for the sum of $800 million in total. Highlights of the settlement include a free software update for an estimated 100,000 affected vehicles, $2,800 (on average) in compensation for eligible customers and $400 million in civil penalties to various federal and state authorities.
