EOS R3 in development

Another month, another development announcement… the next Canon camera will be a high-end model for news and sports pros, with a stacked image sensor

Canon’s forthcoming EOS R3, a pro camera aimed at sports and news photographers, will boast 30fps continuous shooting, a brand-new stacked backside illuminated (BSI) image sensor, “next-generation Dual Pixel CMOS AF” and Eye Control Function autofocus.

The EOS R3 will sit between the DSLR flagship EOS-1D X Mark III and the current top-of-the-line mirrorless camera, the EOS R5. As this news was a development announcement, rather than a full product announcement, many important specs – including the EOS R3’s megapixel count and video capabilities – are yet to be revealed. But given what we do know, the EOS R3 has the new Sony Alpha 1 in its sights – at least in the all-important speed stakes, the defining feature of cameras for sports photography. The headline feature, which matches the A1, is the 30fps burst shooting with full AF/AE tracking and minimal rolling shutter. This is made possible by the new stacked image sensor (the first ever in an EOS camera), which delivers super-fast readout speeds while minimising distortion. The EOS R3 is expected later this year. www.canon.com; £TBC/$TBC
