The 2007 DVD box set of the Key to Time season (1978-79) and the 2008 DVD box set of The Trial of a Time Lord (1986).
Given Doctor Who’s dominance in physical media, it’s remarkable how late the show came to the box-set hustle. Other TV shows took advantage of the DVD revolution in the early 2000s, presenting collected sets of episodes – the bigger and uglier the box, the better. Yet Doctor Who sat things out, releasing random stories higgledypiggledy from across all its eras. Only two of the original 26 seasons were released intact – Season 16, with its linked quest to find the Key to Time, and Season 23’s series-spanning The Trial of a Time Lord.
