Russell T Davies’ long relationship with Doctor Who Magazine began in his home town, Swansea. “I bought issue 1 in the Sketty Park newsagent’s next to my school,” he says. “I hadn’t even heard about it – hadn’t seen any of the adverts. I simply walked into the newsagent’s, probably to buy a Mars Bar or something, and there was Issue 1 of Doctor Who Weekly! It was a dream come true. All those photographs! I loved the archive features. And the comic strip! Dave Gibbons, one of the finest comic-strip artists in the world. During that first year of Doctor Who Weekly I remember that distribution was slightly dodgy. If it didn’t turn up in that newsagent’s I’d have to walk two miles across town to get it in another shop.”
