It’s the classic conundrum — and one Seinfeld summed up perfectly in “The Dinner Party”, when George Costanza asks: “So you’re telling me, instead of them being happy to see me, they’re going to be upset because I didn’t bring anything?”
Coming from an Italian household, I couldn’t tell you what it’s like to show up with nothing, because we tend to over-gesture rather than under-gesture. And on a personal level, I don’t even know what I would do with my hands if I turned up with nothing — just imagining this scenario makes me break out into a sweat.
