It’s surprising that it’s taken basketball superfan Adam Sandler this long to bleed that passion into his films. Hustle sees him play Philadelphia 76ers scout Stanley Sugerman, who thinks he’s found the next big star in Bo Cruz (real-life NBA player Juancho Hernangómez), a streetball phenom from Spain. All the standard sports-drama tropes are dutifully checked off in Taylor Materne and Will Fetters’ screenplay, but director Jeremiah Zagar executes the familiar game plan well and the many stylistic flourishes add welcome spice. Sandler is also ably supported by Hernangómez, an unsurprisingly huge presence on the court, while also nailing Cruz’s naive vulnerability when the focus switches from basketball to family.
