“I work on Ableton. With each track, it works differently. Sometimes I’ll come up with the lyrics first and then think about, ‘okay, what kind of music will suit this?’ Otherwise I’ll start by coming up with a drum beat working on a drum machine, or just working with the guitar or a synthesiser or whatever it is.
“It’s different every time, but for one example, the opening track on the record starts with a harmonium recording that I made in Pakistan and then put through loads of effects. That track, In Light, I came up with by working on a loop pedal. I guess you can hear that in the structure, because it has a lot of different layers of guitar that build up along with a lot of vocal layers. That simplistic approach worked for the opening of the album, creating what I was trying to achieve emotionally. It works as a palate-cleanser, getting you ready for the rest of it.
