Boasting a sound that combines retro house and techno flavours with contemporary production flair, Berlin-based artist Joal has scored enviable releases with labels including Selador, Knee Deep In Sound and Minus. We caught up with Joal so he could break down his bubbling progressive groover Eighty Four, and discuss his hardware-heavy approach to beatmaking.
You seem to mainly generate your sounds using modern synth hardware such as the Behringer DeepMind 12 and the Nord Rack 2X. What is it about these synths that you prefer over software?
“Well, firstly, the analogue sounds different to the digital sounds, though nowadays it’s harder to find a difference. It’s hard to differentiate what is analogue and what is digital, but nevertheless there is still a low-end that is hard to capture in a plugin.
