They call the area near the front line in Ukraine the Grey Zone because it tends to be mainly the elderly who have been left behind in the horrific shadow of the war. British photojournalist Sean Sutton spent three months this summer documenting the day-to-day trauma of those struggling to survive there. Read his moving report on Page 22. This month, we also travel to Svalbard in the Arctic Circle to see another aspect of Russia’s geopolitical ambitions. Here the war is more cold than hot as the Putin regime manoeuvres to keep its foothold in these barren islands. Slovenian writer Boštjan Videmšek discovered how both the war in Ukraine and climate change are raising the temperature in this increasingly strategically important archipelago (see Page 50).
