From: Simon Hollington Sir,
I read, with much interest, Captain Doran’s winning 2024 Walcheren Essay on Artificial Intelligence (AI), its potential impact on the battlefield and whether it heralds a Revolution in Military Affairs. I am mindful that it was written last year, but such are the recent advancements in AI that his prognosis needs, I think, to be challenged.
Captain Doran argues that AI relies on ‘inductive logic (reasoning from complete data sets) where the nature of war demands decisions based on abductive logic (reasoning from incomplete data sets and using theory to come to conclusions)’. This now seems to have been overtaken by recent events.
