Exercise is great for our physical and mental health, but does it really help us lose weight – or are we too prone to using that quick jog as justification for a large muffin and sugary coffee? Experts disagree, but a new study has added to evidence that it does work for weight loss. Researchers collected data from 130 participants using new methods like short surveys delivered to smartphones several times a day, with hip-worn trackers measuring activity – with the aim of finding out when people are tempted to overeat and come up with ways to help them stop. They found that in all cases, exercise cut the risk of overeating, from 12 to 5 per cent – with light exercise being the best.
