Inside Crochet  |  Issue 165
Whenever I’m looking for a comforting, vintage shade of yarn, I will always choose mustard yellow. Even in the depths of a northern hemisphere winter, this warm shade brings to mind hot markets, comforting soup and even 1960s interiors. And in the summer, mustard yellow adds sunshine and soul to any outfit or accessory. So with that in mind, this issue speaks to the seasons around the globe. From deep saffron yellow to cinnamon brown and hot paprika orange, a bit of spice livens up any project!
Of course, I’ve raided my not inconsiderable stash of mustards to bring you a simple but seasonal delight – a kerchief – which can be adapted to any yarn weight or blend to suit. But besides that, this issue is simply brimming with inspiration! Cassie Ward’s zigzag-patterned jumper has clever detail in the beautiful funnel neck and gorgeous colour combinations, while Kimberley Bate brings us the heat and spice of a Mexican street-food stall with her gorgeous granny-stitch tank top. Claire Montgomerie’s soft cinnamon cardigan is a future wardrobe classic; I particularly love the burgundy brown as it works as a lovely warm but neutral colour.
We have some stunning accessories too, with innovative use of colour in Emma Leith’s gorgeous cape-cum-snood, and in Rosina Northcott’s beanie which has one of the ultimate hat design elements: a giant pom-pom. We had lots of fun styling Millie Masterton’s gorgeous pinafore dress on my daughter, Dottie. She loved the dress so much she wore it all the way home from the photoshoot – the mark of a true hit!
