Tartan Noir/ Nordic Noir

There is a glow about Scottish and Scandinavian crime writing. Tartan Noir and Nordic Noir both exude an air of confidence, pride and independence. The stories shimmer in all kinds of shades, beautiful and surprising. Just like the Merry Dancers the countries share. Only a bit darker.

”Scotland and Scandinavia have a special mental connection. It is as if we were related. Perhaps it has to do with the fact that it is dark most part of the year. We sit indoors pondering, looking out at the world”, writer Ian Rankin says.

”I think the darker side of our literary inheritance has to do with that and the fact we have the same kind of democracy”.

Ian Rankin is the Tartan Noir trendsetter. James Ellroy, the master of “American Noir” is often credited with having come up with the label Tartan Noir.

”Well, to be honest I made it up myself. I walked up to James Ellroy at one of his book signings and introduced myself with the words ”My name is Ian Rankin and I’m the King of Tartan Noir”.
