If We Are Anything Less Than Giants

Twitter @Jeggit

We make of ourselves a deadweight which kills the momentum we have worked so hard to gather

“THERE’S nothing I wouldn’t do for independence,” writes an anonymous account on Twitter, “all we are waiting for is the plan and the green light from Nicola Sturgeon.” The social media pages of just about every social and political movement in the world right now are littered with comments of exactly this nature; that movement members are prepared to devote themselves fully to the cause the moment someone in authority fires the starting pistol and unveils the masterplan. But few making or reading these grand gesture comments realise what they are, excuses. They are poor attempts to rationalise one’s inactivity and apathy – the Phobos and Deimos of all mass movements which, if unchecked, lead to entropy and ultimately to the demise of the cause. The spirit is willing, but the body is weak.
