I RECENTLY invested in a new PC. My old one was running dreadfully slow, and JAWS often stuttered or even froze when I was trying to work on files. I have a relative who is a PC enthusiast, and he built me a custom PC. It costs rather more than investing in a new laptop, but I’m also hoping it will last considerably longer. It also meant I could retain my existing full-size keyboard, my monitor and speakers. These are all pretty basic pieces of equipment, but I’m familiar with them, so having them on hand was very helpful.

The setup went remarkably smoothly. I’d backed up all the data files I wanted to keep into my OneDrive, so copying them back was easy. And once I signed in to Microsoft, all my browser Favourites were there in Edge. I even got Classic Outlook, which was a pleasant surprise as I’d expected to need to move to a new mail client. With Excel and Word, I was almost ready to go, although I did have a few other apps to install and pin to my Taskbar.
