It’s now a year on from the appearance of a novel virus which has resulted in a devastating pandemic. This virus is now officially referred to as SARS-Cov-2 but we also still know it by its initial ‘nom de guerre’, Covid-19. SARS-Cov-2 causes a two-phase response in its victims. The initial immediate response to the presence of the virus is followed by an inflammatory response. We know that it is particularly nasty for the elderly and the socially and medically vulnerable but, overall, more than 99% of those infected will survive. With these individuals there may be nothing much in the way of symptoms or they may have a flu-like illness lasting a week or two.
