1 Easter is a wonderful time to visit Abruzzo, and in particular Chieti, because as well as beautiful views and lovely weather, the city offers a very special cultural experience at this time of year. The Holy Friday Parade, which takes place in Chieti every year, is supposed to be one of the oldest Easter parades in Italy. A choir of 1,000 hooded men follows a large cross around the oldest part of the city, accompanied by 150 violins. It is a dramatic spectacle for participants and spectators alike.
2 After watching the parade, why not sample the regional Easter speciality, a salami called tomasella? Other local cucina povera traditions include meatballs made from cheese and eggs rather than meat, and the unique maccheroni alla chitarra pasta.
