Money shouldn’t be an obstacle to your green-fingered ambitions, says Benedict Vanheems. Get clever, leave the wallet at home and grow a lot more with a lot less!

Look, I’ll admit it: I’m a bit of a cheapskate. But then I suspect – and please don’t take this the wrong way – you probably are too! Saving a few readies is one of the reasons many of us choose to grow our own after all. Along with outstanding taste and the freshest food you could ever enjoy, of course.

One of the great things about home-grown fruit and veg is that the same harvests can be had for either pennies or pounds – which is up to you and it depends on how much time and skill you care to devote. Personal wealth needn’t matter; gardening is a great leveller.

I love to get away with doing things on a shoestring, though it isn’t all about saving money. There is a sense of real gratification to be had from producing a lot more from a lot less. Self-sufficiency is a worthy skill, which in today’s increasingly unpredictable world it doesn’t hurt to have. But, Mad Max scenarios aside, who doesn’t love saving a few bob? So with this in mind, let’s look at a few ways to prune costs while filling the larder.
