Veg with the WOW FACT

In this issue veg expert Sue Stickland takes a look at Two stately vegetables that add impact as well as flavor

The plants are handsome enough for a flower border

Ipicked my first globe artichokes this year in the middle of April. The purple sprouting broccoli had just finished and the erwintering broad beans were still to come, so the appearance – without any hassle – of this fresh, deliciously different vegetable was a delight.

In the UK, the plump flower buds or ‘heads’ of globe artichokes are usually considered a gourmet crop and are often ignored even by serious veg growers, but in most areas they are easy to grow and – like many perennial vegetables – have the potential to produce an early ‘hungry gap’ crop. With their enormous silvery leaves and stature (2m/6ft or more in height), they need plenty of space but you could fit them into an odd corner of a veg plot or allotment or make use of their handsome height in a flower bed. I have a perennial border with asparagus, rhubarb, globe artichokes and edible flowers which makes an attractive harvestable screen to disguise our woodpile in the summer months.
