HISTORIC ABBEY CELEBRATES 800th ANNIVERSARY

Culross Abbey in Fife kicked off a year of 800th anniversary celebrations with a schools’ concert in March.

The Abbey was founded in 1217 by Malcolm, the 7th Earl of Fife. Over the next few centuries the western section fell into disrepair but, in 1633, the eastern section became the local parish church of the Church of Scotland and is still in use today.

A small local group led by church elder John Laird, assisted by two elders from the Abbey Church of Dunfermline, Brian Blanchflower and Frances McCafferty, is organising a series of celebratory events during the year.

About Life and Work

The month of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland will be almost upon us as this issue reaches our readers. Reports will be debated and pronouncements made on a wide range of issues. One thing will be evident: the wind of change will begin to blow over the shape of the Church. After a series of roadshows over the length and breadth of the land from London to Lerwick the feedback on the future of the Church is being carefully analysed and considered.
