Rumours have been swirling for a long time that Apple is working on some kind of augmented reality (AR) or virtual reality (VR) headset. Recently, though, we have had a surge of leaks, rumours, and news relating to the project, all of which have helped shed light on an otherwise highly secretive project.
One of the main sources of information has been a major report from Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman. In the report, Gurman explains that Apple is working on a headset that blends both VR and AR. This device would primarily focus on the former, but has multiple cameras to help provide AR experiences. The long-term goal will be to bring out a pair of AR glasses in a few years’ time.
Some previously seen prototypes of the headset have been too bulky and heavy, causing undue strain on users’ necks. In response, Apple has sought to lighten the load by using fabric in the design. Apple is aiming to power the headset with a battery rather than cables, increasing its portability.
On the inside, the headset would use some of Apple’s “most advanced and powerful” chips, some of which allegedly outperform the M1 chip used in the latest MacBooks. Gurman also believes Apple is testing a model with a fan to keep the device cool – unusual given the efficiency of Apple’s in-house chips, but perhaps understandable for user comfort.
