Retro rides gathering
Posted February 5, 2015
The location might've changed, but the same fantastic atmosphere, brilliant people and amazing selection of cars remains; we get to grips with Retro Rides Gathering 2014!
Regular readers will have seen our show reports from the Retro Rides Gathering over the last few years, and it's no secret that we consider it one of the UK's best car shows, thanks in no small part to the massive variety of makes and models in attendance. It's chilled out, friendly, and takes place in achingly pretty surroundings. The last few years have seen RRG take over Prescott hill climb, but it became apparent in 2013 that the show had outgrown the venue, hence why 2014 saw it move north, to the even more picturesque Shelsley Walsh hill climb in Worcestershire. This place has the distinction of being the World's oldest motor racing venue still in operation, making it ideally suited for the wide selection of retro motors that came along for the weekend. We're aware that we say this every year, but the Retro Rides Gathering really is a show you need to attend if you're a fan of older Vauxhalls and retro motors in general.
LEIGH SAUNDERS - CHEVETTE LET
Making a genuinely convincing sleeper is deceptively tough, as the temptation to fit lairy aftermarket wheels (and therefore give the game away) is always there. Leigh's Chevette was one of our favourite cars from the show therefore, as it's just so amazingly subtle and well realised —you'd never guess that 29ebhp of C2oLET lurks under the bonnet! This car has been built by old car legends and all round good guys, Retro Power, and the project is littered with examples of the attention to detail we've come to expect from Callum and the team. That LET sports Omega pistons with forged rods, with a Cosworth T34 turbo slung over the side. Gear selection duties are now handled by an R28 'box from an Omega, with an old school Reliant Scimitar rear end. Those VW steels are a brilliant addition to the car as they look so, so subtle, plus they're the perfect home to the Wilwood front brake setup — important when you've got so much power in a featherweight `70s saloon!
DAVID MUNT - MK2 CAVALIER LX
It's easy to forget that messing around with cars is supposed to be fun, so it's always nice when you see a car and driver combination that doesn't take itself too seriously. David !Aunt is a case in point, with him and his brother, Paul (his Mk2 SRii3o estate was featured last year), showing up in this `9os-tactic Mk2 Cavalier. The pair rescued it from a breakers and set about putting it back on the road, tackling the crusty arches and flaky sun-roof, before doing what people have been doing to Mk2 Cavaliers for decades — fitting an XE! The Vauxhall parts bin raid continued, with 256mm Cavalier discs finding their way onto the front hubs, plus a Spax suspension system to tighten up the old car's road manners. That's all well and good, but it was the tongue-in-cheek tiger stripes, "just to wind up the Ford boys", Skeet Motorsport stickers and oh-so divisive three-spoke alloys that really caught our attention and made us grin! David and Paul spent most of the event firing the i-body up the hill at comical speeds, only stopping to Let the poor old thing cool down between runs. There's wide, there's super wide, and then there's this wide!!
