AMD has revealed its Zen 4-based Threadripper processors, with up to 96 cores and 192 threads. Early tests of the Threadripper Pro 7995WX show them to be the proper monsters you might expect: it trounced comparable Intel systems, and is over 50 percent faster than the previous generation’s 5995WX. The ‘WX’ Threadrippers are aimed at Workstations, but if you fancy a piece of the action then AMD has three ‘X’ Threadrippers: the $4,999 7980X, which carries 64 Zen 4 cores; the $2,499 7970X with 32, and the £1,499 7960X with 24. You’ll also need the new TRX50 motherboard, with 88 usable PCIe 5.0 lanes, and quad-channel memory support. The result will be a beast. AMD’s return probably won’t revive the HEDT markey, but it gives ambitious builders something to think about. –CL
