Sustainability in mental health nursing

Siobhan Parslow-Williams Stefi Barna

Abstract With the goal of decarbonisation and carbon neutrality in the health sector by 2045, health professionals must implement systemic changes in their clinical practice to reduce carbon use, while meeting equity targets and improving health outcomes. Sustainable healthcare practices address the socio-ecological determinants that undermine population health, help clinicians intervene as early as possible in the disease process, deliver ‘lean’ healthcare pathways and reduce the ‘triple bottom line’ costs of healthcare provision, in order to benefit patients, populations and the environment. Mental health nurses can play a key role in improving health outcomes using the sustainability in quality improvement (SusQI) framework.
