Physical health in mental health – my experience as a nursing student

I am a second year mental health nursing student who has gained a substantial amount of experience in both mental health and physical health skills during the first year of my training. I felt that my nursing ‘tool bag’ was filling up nicely.

I value the importance of being both physical health trained and mental health trained as the aim for healthcare staff is to look after the health of the whole person.

A holistic care approach is vital when visiting people in the community due to the recent reports of deterioration in the physical health of mental health patients (NICE, 2019).
