In 2020, Code Orange were on the verge of releasing their fourth album, Underneath, when their launch show was cancelled due to the pandemic. The Pittsburgh sextet turned it into a livestream, setting a trend in the process. Steadfast and focused, they continued grinding with more virtual and real-life shows, a live album (Under My Skin) and a remix album (What Is Really Underneath?) –before finally hitting us with this year’s uncompromising follow-up, The Above. It took their stuttering, electronic metal attack and laced it with gorgeous alt rock and shoegaze melodies. “We had a lot building up inside of us, and I think that’s the reason why the album came out the way it did,” says guitarist/backing vocalist Reba Meyers. “We got to do so many different types of releases in the last few years, so we got to dig a little deeper and learn about what it is that we really wanted to make.”
