ROCK’N’ROLL CONFIDENTIAL
Moon Unit Zappa
Frank’s eldest talks Dad, family and “spelunking in hell” for her memoir.
BORN IN 1967, Moon Unit Zappa was the first of four Zappa siblings – Dweezil, Ahmet and Diva duly followed. Her middle name was chosen because father Frank, already a huge counterculture figure, declared the Zappa family was now a ‘unit’. Moon achieved some public notoriety of her own when Frank had her mimic some of the Encino girls at her school for what became a massive 1982 hit, Valley Girl. Now she returns with her own perspective on the Zappa family unit. “My book [Earth To Moon] is for anybody that feels an outsider in their own families, an outsider from the world,” she says, calling in from Los Angeles. “Did you laugh at all?” Moon adds hopefully. “Oh, yes,” replies MOJO. The book is as funny as it is frank.
