ON APRIL 16, AT 3 P.M., AS THE Pulitzer Prize winners were announced, Ryan Kelly was on an airplane. When it landed and he turned on his phone, the congratulatory texts poured in: photojournalist Kelly had been awarded his profession’s highest prize—alongside rapper Kendrick Lamar and the investigative reporters who broke the Harvey Weinstein scandal—for his devastating image of a car plowing into a crowd of counterprotesters at a white nationalist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia. The August 12, 2017, attack killed one person, Heather Heyer, and injured 19 others.
