Is the concept of stroke counting in swimming misunderstood, asks Simon Griffiths

If you watch elite swimmers, they typically take fewer strokes per length than the rest of us. The natural conclusion from this is that if we want to swim faster, we should increase the distance we travel with each stroke.

However, instead of speeding up when they reduce their stroke count (i.e. number of strokes per length), non-elite swimmers sometimes find they slow down and/or get more tired.
