Racing in cold water is a bit like childbirth. The signing up for it is pleasant enough. Event organiser Paul Fowler very cleverly sends out the invites in the summer, when you’re swimming in 20 degrees and you think – oh, it might be quite fun. Then the reality hits. You wake up under your nice warm duvet and look outside. Someone mentions the water temperature and you start to worry.
