The Nether has always been a part ofMinecraftfrom the very beginning, with it’s lava-filled caverns and vicious mobs gobbling up any brave souls who venture in. The recent 1.16 update givesMinecraft’sforeboding underbelly a hellish overhaul, adding four new biomes, lots of creepy mobs, and more blocks, including a new ore that is even stronger than diamond. Journeying to The Nether is far from a jolly jaunt, but these brand new additions make the risky delve into its fiery pits more rewarding than ever before.
Hopping through your obsidian Nether portal will now transport you to one of the four new underground biomes, and each one is more malevolent than the last. The old Nether is still around too but is now called The Nether Wastes and remains relatively unchanged - still lots of fire and deadly lava lakes to make you feel right at home.
The first biome I get randomly teleported to is the Crimson Forest, an area of dense blood-red trees. There’s no sunlight in The Nether, so the plant life here takes on a more alien appearance. Long vines trail down from the cavern ceilings, fungi cover the floor, and tree bark is covered in a red weed crawling up their trunks like veins.
