The Rover won Car of the Year for 1977, the perfect launch pad for a European introduction, but sadly thwarted by a toolmakers’ strike and a lack of left-hand drive stock. But it all came good in the end; the range expanded upwards and downwards during a production run lasting a decade, and despite a ropey reliability record the SD1 built a loyal following that remains forty years later.
