EDWARD REEKERS
From Early Days Of Infancy...
When Jethro Tull released The Broadsword And The Beast in 1982, many of their fans breathed a sigh of relief: it seemed their favourite band had returned to their more traditional folk rock roots. Ian Anderson reveals the story behind the recently reissued and expanded album that he reckons contains some of Tull’s best music.
Flying Colours
He’s best known for his conceptual designs on blockbuster movies including Star Wars, Marvel’s Cinematic Universe and Harry Potter, but prog fans will recognise Iain McCaig’s fantastical illustrations from The Broadsword And The Beast. The US artist, writer and filmmaker shares the secrets behind the album art… and reveals the truth about the terrifying Beastie that once lived in his attic.

The great and good of progressive music give us a glimpse into their prog worlds. As told to Grant Moon.
FEATURES
THE WAR WITHIN
“We finally feel like we’ve reached that peak TesseracT sound,” declares Daniel Tompkins. As leading lights of the British prog metal scene, TesseracT return with an album that’s equal parts introspection and unfettered ambition. So is War Of Being their most progressive work yet? Bassist Amos Williams and vocalist Tompkins tell Prog about the grand concepts behind it.
“ There are Crimson fans outraged at my conduct!”
Four years ago, no one could have predicted that King Crimson’s super-serious guitar maestro would don a mohawk and makeup, let alone perform covers of songs by Metallica and Slipknot, and yet Toyah & Robert’s Sunday Lunch has completely flipped Robert Fripp’s public persona upside-down. Now that the husband-and-wife team are taking their lockdown project on the road, Prog finds out what this means for the future of King Crimson and why the guitarist believes that the right place for him right now is in front of audiences “having a fabulous time”.

Out Brothers, Out !
Although he denies it’s the band’s farewell album, Strawbs’ mainman Dave Cousins has split fans and former bandmates with current release The Magic Of It All. Recorded in South Africa and bursting at the seams with local talent, it fondly looks back on the group’s colourful career but also brings in new musical flavours. Prog catches up with Cousins to find out what he thinks of those who’ve dismissed the record, and what the future really holds for the band.
Stars Align
What do Haunt The Woods and Peppa Pig have in common? The answer will surprise you, but the curious connection has undoubtedly helped the British alt-proggers find their place in the world on their second album, Ubiquity. Prog catches up with the four-piece to discuss their journey from busking outside local supermarkets to bringing their tantalising music to far bigger audiences.
Everything Must Change
It’s been a challenging eight years since the release of Karnataka’s last studio album, Secrets Of Angels, but sole original member Ian Jones is back with a new line-up and a new burst of creativity that’s captured on Requiem For A Dream. A dramatic evolution but the band insist the spirit of the original band still flows through them. Jones and new vocalist Sertari set the record straight.
“Melody is in our DNA…”
Five studio albums in and Downes Braide Association – the musical partnership between Yes keyboardist Geoff Downes and hit songwriter Chris Braide – have perfected their winning formula. Their latest set, Celestial Songs, finds the pedigree pair teaming up with Andy Partridge, Marc Almond, Francis Dunnery and more. They discuss their musical evolution, the secrets of working together in harmony – and losing their peers too soon.
