WHEN MATTHEW HAYS AND THOMAS WAUGH first launched Arsenal Pulp Press’s Queer Film Classics series in 2009, they received more than one proposal for a book about Brokeback Mountain. But the colleagues in the film department of Montreal’s Concordia University set a goal of championing more under-the-radar LGBTQ films. “We were very interested in changing what a queer canon might look like,” Hays says.
