SCOTRAIL has launched the procurement process for a fleet to supersede its existing 25 ‘Inter7City’ High Speed Train sets, with the aim of it being in “reliable passenger service” from December 2026.
A contract notice was published on December 17, outlining requirements for replacements capable of sustaining a minimum of 19 intercity diagrams per day connecting Glasgow, Edinburgh, Perth, Stirling, Dundee, Inverness and Aberdeen. The ‘Inter7City’ trains, consisting of eight fourcar and 17 five-car sets, will be withdrawn from service as their successors enter service.
“This latest milestone in our rolling programme of decarbonisation will ensure the reliability of our intercity routes for the long-term, making Scotland’s railway a more attractive and greener travel choice,” said Fiona Hyslop, Scotland’s cabinet Secretary for Transport. “Over four million passengers travelled on intercity trains between our key cities in the last year. We want to encourage even more people to do so.”
