Preparing for a winter break prompts a few thoughts about the benefits of cruises – and how our attitude to travel has transformed over the years

This is the month when I pack up my troubles and join a Saga cruise. My wife and I will be onboard Spirit of Discovery, with stops in Lisbon, Madeira and various ports in the Canary Islands.
It’s not a part of the world I know well and so it really will be something of a discovery. Frankly, I can’t wait – although I shall be on my best behaviour because I gather the editor of this magazine will also be on the ship.
