Horror’s always been an authentically vampiric genre. It’s a symbiotic relationship as much as a predatory one – we need the catharsis but it needs our fears as fuel. Natalie Erika James’s debut feature scrapes away the skin of normal life to expose some raw tissue indeed: fear of mortality, bodily decline, the irreversible loss of loved ones. It’s subject matter that gives this film a vivid allegorical power but also makes it wrenching viewing at times.
