Bracing for war: Tensions over Ukraine increased this week as Nato leaders prepared for a possible Russian invasion of the country. The US put 8,500 troops on alert to deploy to eastern Europe to support its allies there, and other Nato members sent additional fighter jets and warships to bolster the defences of countries on the alliance’s
eastern borders. London and Washington ordered some embassy staff and their families to leave Kyiv as a precaution. Russia’s financial markets fell sharply in response to fears of military action.
