1991 ★★★★★ 2 JUNE CINEMAS
Though there are dated aspects of this ’91 classic – Louise’s chain-smoking waitress, Polaroid cameras, no mobiles – the feminist themes of Callie Khouri’s script and Ridley Scott’s uncompromising ending make it as fresh now as it was 32 years ago. Arkansas besties Thelma (Geena Davis), unhappily married, and Louise (Susan Sarandon), worldwise and carrying trauma, set off in their Thunderbird for a weekend away. Their girls’ trip goes south (in every way) when a parking-lot assault on Thelma ends in murder, forcing the women to flee to Mexico. En route, both their friendship and criminality grow; before long, they reach a pathos-laden point of no return.
