A new retelling of DH Lawrence's tale of passion and class. DH Lawrence’s Lady Chatterley’s Lover has caused controversy ever since it was written in 1928. It was initially banned from publication in the UK due to its graphic depiction of a love affair across the class divide. Then, in 1960, when Penguin Books published the novel, they won a high-profile obscenity trial in which the prosecutor famously asked the jury, ‘Is it a book you would even wish your wife or servants to read?’ This week, a TV adaptation of the groundbreaking novel begins a new BBC1 season which will dramatise four classics of 20th century literature.
