When Princess Elizabeth was born on 21st April 1926, her grandma, the famously stiff and starchy Queen Mary, was so thrilled she declared the infant: "a little darling." Her father, then Duke of York, was ecstatic. "She makes our happiness complete" he wrote. Outside, the London street
was packed with well-wishers, and newspapers and magazines gushed with updates about the royal birth. Gifts also poured into the Duke and Duchesses, house in Bruton Street and, even though the baby was never expected to be Queen, Elizabeth was a star from the moment she arrived.
