Follow womag writer Glynis Scriven’s advice on how you can turn one plot into two successful pieces of commercial fiction

Sometimes a story surprises us by selling to several different magazines. If only we could keep offering it to more markets. Everyone seems to like it.

We can. If we learn how to convert one plot into two different stories.

It took me years to work out how to do this.

It’s really very simple. Tell the same story from two different points of view. Here’s an example.

One of my early stories, When You Wish Upon A Star, sold to Australia’s Woman’s Day in 2006. The following year it sold to Candis. Subsequently it sold in Norway (2008), India (2008), South Africa (2009) and was included in an English anthology (2010).

This story is written from a woman’s point of view. The heroine feels disillusioned with home life after watching her husband spread manure over the garden all afternoon. When she meets a handsome singer, it’s hard not to make comparisons. The singer seems to encapsulate everything they’ve let slip away. Is it too late to retrieve their passion?
