TOO MUCH OR TOO LITTLE?

The importance of watering correctly is significant, as both over and under-watering can cause disease and even kill plants. Yet knowing exactly how much to water is one of the biggest challenges gardeners face, as there are no hard and fast rules. The best approach is to try and ensure soil is evenly damp then keep an eye on your plants to see if there are any signs of discontent. Many indicators of over and under-watering are similar and include wilting, no new growth and leaves that are changing colour. If you are still unsure where you are going wrong look at the roots, overwatering will result in root rot and if you have been starving a plant of water you may see the roots starting to grow towards the surface in a desperate bid for hydration. The soil is also a good gauge, if it is cracked then chances are the plants there aren’t receiving enough water, likewise if the ground is sodden then you have been overzealous with your supply. Remove any guesswork with a moisture monitor to indicate when you should and shouldn’t turn on the tap.
