Interview with Ryan Baker - Creative Director at Rebellion on Zombie Army 4
What do you think about zombies in video games?
Over the last decade they’ve been making waves. I think it goes through all media, they’ve made a resurgence in TV and movies as well - as they always do. It died down for a little bit and, as zombies do, they’re back again. I think with video games, they’re a very good staple to use because people get a bit squeamish if you’re killing people too much, but if you’re killing people who are already dead isn’t so bad.
It also gives us a bit of freedom in games design to not worry about going into that area of unrealism because it’s ok for zombies to take more hits to put them down, because they’re not a real thing and can be superhuman in any way you like.
In ZA4 we have the classic Romero classic shambling zombies that make up the bulk of the zombies in the game, but we also have our alternate universe; so we decide that we can do different things with the zombie types.
